Dances of the Neurotransmitters

About dances of neurotransmitters

These digital artworks are a monochromatic exploration of "neurodivergent joy," composed of microscopic symbols for dopamine, norepinephrine and oxytocin.
This body of work invites the viewer to move between the macro and the micro, between celebratory motion from afar, and the specific molecular language of the human spirit upon closer inspection.

It hopes to explore how the physical basis of our emotions possesses its own intrinsic beauty.

The Celebratory Dance

The compositions feature a rhythmic, looping choreography of dopamine molecules.

The kinetic dance of an uninterrupted hyperfocus.

In this piece, the chemistry of attention is depicted as a dance. Using the molecular symbol for dopamine molecules, the work depicts a sudden, joyful upwelling of energy. It maps the trajectory of a successful hyperfocus: a burst of intense, swirling activity.

Chemical Scales. Dopamine and Norepinephrine_

Chemical Scales

In this piece the chemistry of the mind is arranged to evoke the lines of musical notation. Three distinct trajectories of dopamine and norepinephrine sweep from bottom-left to top-right. They aim to mimic neurodivergent focus: starting small, building to a crescendo of size and intensity, receding, and then surging forward again. While inconsistent focus can often be a struggle, this piece explores the moments where that rhythm finds a groove. In this interpretation, the artwork hopes to capture the waxing and waning of attention not as a failure of consistency, but as musical score or part of the human spirit.

Future areas of exploration:

According to the neurodiversity directory an extremely spiky neurodivergent profile refers to a highly uneven pattern of cognitive and functional abilities. While "neurotypical" individuals tend to have a relatively flat, average skill set, a spiky profile features sharp, jagged peaks of exceptional ability alongside deep valleys of significant challenge.  Since being misunderstood is a big theme in my life I am keen to explore how this could be represented visually, using neurotransmitters and patterns.
